Madelyn Shumaker Memorial Scholarship
The Madelyn Shumaker Memorial Scholarship has been established by Corrie and Jesse Shumaker to honor the life of their beloved daughter, Maddie, who passed away on December 10, 2015.
Maddie began at Brownell Talbot as a preschooler in the Fall of 2010. She spent six wonderful years at BT deeply loving her school, classmates, and teachers. She was known in the classroom as a caring, kind, and energetic student with a compassionate heart. Maddie’s friendships at school were not defined by grade or interest. She had friends that crossed grade levels and school divisions because everyone who met Maddie remembered her outgoing spirit and bright smile. Maddie loved animals (especially panda bears), painting, music, crafts, and table games. She was on the Brownell Talbot swim team, played soccer, basketball, and tennis, and loved attending BT Upper School athletic events.
Maddie was only seven years old when she was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a highly aggressive and difficult to treat brain tumor found at the base of the brain. After initial treatment, she enjoyed seven symptom-free months. Her decline at the end was mercifully swift, and she left this life at peace and unafraid at the age of eight.
In her honor, the Madelyn Shumaker Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to student(s) in the Brownell Talbot Class of 2025 who demonstrate financial need. The scholarship may be awarded to a different student each school year, but it is not a requirement of the award.
