It has been an exciting summer for Brownell Talbot's Theatre Department. Following a remarkable return to the stage during the 2021-2022 school year in which audiences were wow'ed by BT's productions of Disney's The Little Mermaid and I Never Saw Another Butterfly, the program has earned multiple awards and honors recognizing their efforts:
EdTA's Theatre In Our Schools Outstanding Impact Award
Educational Theatre Association (EdTA) is an international organization supporting school theatre students and teachers. BT received the Outstanding Impact Award by demonstrating BT's theatre program has gone above and beyond when it comes to advocating for theatre education. The award was sponsored by Disney Theatrical Productions, who awarded BT with the license for a free Disney full-length title, effectively covering costs for the upcoming fall production of Disney's Descendants.
EdTA Recognizes Dr. Gibbs as Administrator of the Year
Head of School Kristi N. Gibbs, Ed.D., has been selected to receive the 2022 National Administrator’s Award, which recognizes outstanding school administrators who have demonstrated exemplary support for educational theatre. Theatre director Jenn Morgan nominated Dr. Gibbs because of her exceptional history of recognition, encouragement, and promotion of educational theatre at BT. Dr. Gibbs will be honored at the annual Theatre Education Conference in late September in Los Angeles, CA.
BT Volunteers Earn Two of Three ITS Honorary Thespian of the Year Awards
International Thespian Society recognizes up to three individuals annually who have gone above and beyond the standard duties of a volunteer. Congratulations to BT parent Casey Garrigan and to Ms. Morgan's daughter Liz Zellner for claiming two of these spots this year! Ms. Morgan celebrated Casey for building sets and providing extensive mentorship to the backstage crew. Ms. Morgan highlighted Liz's willingness to teach students front of house skills like ushering, house management, and ticketing in addition to leading the charge in providing an extra wow factor through lobby decor and costuming.
BT Invited to Perform at Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland
BT has been accepted into the 2024 American High School Theatre Festival, which selects schools for the international Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland. As part of this opportunity, student thespians will also attend master classes at The Globe and Royal Shakespeare Company in London before heading to Edinburgh where they will put on four performances of their production, and attend other Fringe shows. Inspired by the possibility of receiving this rare honor, BT's theatre students began writing an original musical this past spring.
More great things are in store for BT's Theatre Department this year! You won't want to miss the grades 8-12 fall musical, Disney's Descendants, and the grades 7-12 spring play Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic. Stay tuned for audition information and performance details!
