Introducing lifeTRACKS
Expanding Skills to Thrive in Life
Since its inception in 1863, Brownell-Talbot School’s mission has been to promote excellence in scholarship and foster personal growth. Our independent school status permits us to be attentive to the needs of each student and flexible in our programming in order to accomplish this mission.
What began as an opportunity to enhance physical fitness for Upper School students has expanded to a program with important implications for each child beginning at age three. lifeTRACKS will intentionally address practical life skills that touch on all areas of personal health and wellness, ensuring that our students are prepared to make the right choices now and throughout their lives. The program has three major components: Facilities, Program, and Personnel.
- Facilities
- Construct 4,000 square-foot Fitness Center for cardio-vascular conditioning and strength training
- Renovate Fieldhouse lockers rooms and weight room, and reconfigure office and storage spaces
- Renovate Roberts Lower School Gymnasium and locker room
- Pave parking lot on east side of Roberts Gymnasium
- Complete several miscellaneous repairs
- Program
Without sacrificing academic programming, the lifeTRACKS curriculum will focus on the student and include:
- Physical Health and Wellness (exercise, nutrition, safety, healthy living, and smart choices)
- Personal Development (time management, study skills, problem solving, and career exploration)
- Character Development (values and beliefs, ethical decision-making, and setting goals)
- Social Development (relationships, leadership, citizenship, service, life skills)
- Personnel
As the program develops, we will add four additional faculty/staff positions:
- Program Director – to develop curriculum, be responsible for public relations, education, and marketing, and secure financial support
- Fitness Center Director – will manage the Fitness Center, develop programs, and support the physical education staff
- Curriculum Coordinator – will develop the lifeTRACKS curriculum and map school curricula
- Counselor/Academic Consultant – will develop the character education program and assist teachers to better meet the varied learning needs of each student
Cost: Facilities - $1.8 million; Program and Personnel - $1.2 million
Timeframe: All renovations will be completed during the summer, 2006. The Fitness Center will open Oct. 1. All summer activities will continue as planned.
Support: Several major donors have come forward with substantial gifts. Solicitation will continue throughout the fall.
