Message from Father Loya

In the few years our daughter has been a BT student, the school has made an incredible difference in her life, and the life of our family. I've seen firsthand how deeply the faculty, staff, and administrators care about our students and their families, and how hard they work to make our school a truly outstanding place of teaching and learning. What we do as a school is challenging, rewarding, and some of the most important work that anyone could be called to take up. I'm so grateful to join the BT staff this year as Chaplain. It is an enormous privilege to share some of this important work with such a great team.

One of the strengths of our school community is its considerable religious diversity. Students, faculty, and staff represent a wide variety of different faith traditions, and I believe that will serve our students well as they prepare to take their place as leaders in an increasingly diverse and more closely connected world. As an independent school with historic ties to the Episcopal Church, we are uniquely positioned to help our students engage their own religious traditions with authenticity, while at the same time preparing them to encounter religious difference with tolerance, compassion, and respect. In the coming months, I hope we will be able to shape a chapel program that remains grounded in the Episcopal Christian tradition that gave birth to our school (which is also my own tradition), while also working to be attentive to the diversity of faiths present in our midst, and open to receive the unique wisdom and gifts present in our various traditions. I hope to spend a significant amount of time in this first semester engaging with students, faculty, parents, and staff around how I might best help us do that. If you have particular questions, concerns, or hopes for the chapel program, I would very much welcome the chance to visit with you further. Even though I'm not present on campus full-time, my virtual door is always open. Feel free to call me anytime at 402-209-2559, or email me at craig.loya@brownell.edu.

Many blessings for a great year,
Father Loya
